Betty Rose’s Wedding…

This post was written by my Grandmom Betty Rose

December 12, 1951
We were married in the chapel of a big Presbyterian Church in Lubbock, Texas and it was just the way we planned. It was later in the evening on a Monday night (only in California do you have to get married on the weekends!). Our reception was at my home. Mother and friends did a great job. it was my parent’s silver wedding anniversary, therefore I selected blue and silver for my colors. I made my dress as well as my maid of honor’s dress and my mother’s dress. Rick was a senior at Texas Tech and planned to do post-graduate work. He was a professional student I’m sure! We stayed our first night together in Lubbock. Rick could only get a room with two beds– what a shock that was for me when we arrived! But, as you can tell we didn’t care. Rick was in school and our parents didn’t have a lot of money, we were very frugal. We traveled to Houston to our apartment, Rick took off a semester. Before it was time to go back to school I was “with child,” Suzan, so we lost another semester. It was well worth it!! So Rick was back in school and doing well and we had our baby. Rick and I both worked and my mother cared for Suzie.
Now remember, Rick was a senior when we married and before he left Tech I had three babies (Suzan, Richard & Janet). On the third pregnancy we bought a little TV!!
When the third baby was born we moved to California. Rick had a wonderful job so he came first to get money for me to come. Although the company paid my expenses. Within a week we found our first home in La Mirada for a $250.00 down payment, which Rick’s parents loaned us. Then we were so comfortable that we had baby #4 (Kathleen).
Again, remember Rick and I were only children and what a big family we have now (4 kids, 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren).

As I write this to you I’m reflecting back and there is not one thing I would change. I loved Rick, and my children, and having no money was OK.
Our marriage only lasted 53 years. 2 days after our 53rd anniversary Rick died. I’ve had a wonderful life to remember!

I wanted this post date to be 12/12/1951 but blogger won’t let me anything before 1970. I was able to put my mom’s on her actual wedding date! I think I’m so cool…LOL!
